Walking in Austria

Standard

IMG_0994We took the local bus from Mayrhofen toHintertux. Hintertux is a local ski mountain where you can ski 365 days of the year. We were not skiing but walking. The lift to the top is in three stages but we hoped off after the first stage and walked down into the town. Now I like walking down!  We started off in full cloud but walked down into hot sunshine ☀️

IMG_1001The walks are extremely well signposted so route finding is easy. We crossed bridges, admired the spring flowers and dodged cows. The cows all wear typical cow bells which you can hear from way off ( the purpose of the bells I suppose)

IMG_1009Apparently the better the milker the cow is the bigger the bell. Now I think that this is extremely mean. Not only does the poor girl have to carry a great big udder but a great big bell as well!

Awesome Austria

Standard

Hubs and I are having a cheeky week in Mayrhofen Austria. We have been multiple times but are still thrilled with the beautiful mountains, valleys and waterfalls. The mountain tops are easily accessible due to the chair lifts

When you reach the end of the lifts the restaurants are fabulous putting our efforts on Snowdon to shame. All the many paths are well labelled with numbers making walking much easier. Your not SUPPOSED to get lost👣

We generally buy a six day mountain pass which enables lift use free buses and train. Not bad value.

Great time out as I hardly ever go away ha ha😎

Awesome Austria Day Six

Standard

Today we walked hobbled around the Zillar Valley in Austria. I would take a pic of my toes but they are far too grusome for publication! My other excuse is that thirty plus degrees is far to hot for hiking anyway!

We travelled up on the single chair lift at Hippach Ramsau. This is the best lift ever! You just glide up the mountain accompanied only by bird song and a gentle breeze. Sadly it is closing after this year due to high maintenance costs. I Signed the save Ramsau lift petition and will do the same on Facebook.

We stopped at the obligatory cafe at the top of the lift for some refreshment OK beer! I waved Hubs off as he walked into the mountains not to be seen again for several hours. I made my way slowly back to the hotel, avoiding all shopping opportunities. Well it was Sunday, and all or most shops were closed, so I saved a fortune. I enjoyed a swim in the pool ( that didnt hurt feet) and sunbathed in the garden. Bliss!

Awesome Austria Day Four

Standard

Today was the day that I wrecked my feet! It was downhill all the way, but first we had to go up hill!

We decided to go up on the Ahorn gondola from Mayrhofen to the top of the Ahorn Mountain. The Ahorn Gondola is the largest in Austria and travels up the side of the mountain at approximately 36 kilometres per hour. The whole of the area is geared up for skiing but during the summer it is a walkers wonderland.

The next problem was which way to walk? Well I do confess it was my suggestion to walk back down. Who in their right mind would walk down a mountain when you can get a lift? Not only that but we walked 4265 feet DOWN HILL!!

The weather was a relentless 33 degrees. The Hubs was very patient. The feet were a nightmare. The scenery was stupendous. The packed lunch welcome. The water essential.

I did survive and complete the walk/hike/marathon. My poor toes were a different story. I did wear hiking boots but canvas ones. Big mistake. It’s never the wrong walk only the wrong footwear!

Give feet freedom I say!
