Well I reckon that most hair styles are a result of hair dressing products. I am no exception. I wash, condition, mousse, spray and gel most days! This routine is often done whilst on automatic pilot. Take yesterday as an example. I completed a reasonable effort to make my hair look good, reached for the hair spray as usual and STOP! I’d absently picked up spray glue! Not much different than hair spray you might think. Wrong! You try washing it out!
I have used spray starch by mistake in the past. There seems to be a pattern forming here and my hair isn’t that fantastic. I really must separate the household products from the beautification products!

It appeared as an ordinary, if rather tall, white cake embellished with Happy Birthday candles. When I ceremonially cut into it a beautiful rainbow filled with multi coloured sweets appeared, with the sweets cascading out! It was absolutely lovely. Thank you family for a different treat.
The base was surrounded by multi coloured buttons, probably the contents of Darling Daughters button box, which Step Granddaughter begged to take home. A budding crafter here!
Hello dear Blogging friends! This week has seen the launch of Darling Daughter and my new business venture, Nanna Amy’s Vintage Tea Party. The launch day happened to be my birthday ( yes ANOTHER one!). We used the excuse to have a tea party in the local village hall, it was fab!
Invitations were printed and sent out.
The embroidered cloths are just lovely many of which were embroidered by my Nanna Amy more than fifty years ago. I have spent weeks starching and ironing.Darling Daughter took the pictures and found appropriate Vintage music.
We baked cakes and made sandwiches.
The event was a practice run for us to see how our collection of vintage China and linens would look in a party setting. We learned a lot from this first party. It took quite a while to set up and clear away. We need more pastry forks, jam pots and cake slicers. We need party bookings such as Christenings, weddings, hen nights, baby showers and special birthdays.
The marketing push is planned to start next week with the printing of flyers and their distribution. Most importantly we are having fun and Nanna Amy’s linen legacy is being used and loved.
I have spent hours washing and starching lace doilies. I reckon that I’m the only person who uses starch these days. You do get a lovely stiff finish however.
At the last count I had ironed 47 doilies and 6 table cloths! This is for our new venture “Nanna Amy’s Vintage Tea Party” whose launch party gets ever closer!
With the party in mind I have made Blackberry jam. Imagine freshly baked scones, clotted cream and Blackberry jam. Heaven on a plate! All served on vintage place settings.

13) Visiting my Mum and not realising that her care home is in quarantine due to a flu outbreak.
14) Finishing reading my current book mentioned in last blog post.
15) A small amount of time sewing and even less time knitting
16) Walking dog. In fact I think that Hubs has had a new knee as a ploy to make me walk more!
phew!! Sunday evening! No wine and no pub due to Hubs still being on medication. Benji dog has finished his. See what next week brings and I will count how many times I walk Benji dog.
January saw Grandsons sixth birthday and “whale of a cushion”
February found Mum, Sis and myself in Blackpool having a gel manicure each for the first time EVER!
March I taught my Grand daughter to knit ( or tried to!)
April we held a cake sale in aid of Help for Heroes.
During May we walked through Bluebells.
June was enjoyed in Cornwall, sun, sea and sand.
July we returned to Blackpool Tower Ballroom for Mum’s 88th birthday
August we had a bucket and spade holiday in Wales.
September a girl friend and I went to Port Patrick, Scotland.
October we saw Autumn in the Lake District.
November there was the village Bonfire.
December we had Shepherd and Snowball fights, family and friends, gifts and gratefulness for a wonderful year. Happy 2015 to you all my friends.
This week it was my delight to see Paul Hollywood, (judge in the Great a British Bake Off) in his tour of Britain. He was so very good. He entertained, baked, chatted, baked and flirted whilst he baked. He made what looked and smelled like a gorgeous baked Brie wrapped in a bread coat. There was a luscious chocolate, meringue roll. He baked a bread with a Stilton and walnut combo and he demonstrated a complicated bread plait.
Paul was a baker brought up in the North of England and has enjoyed global admiration since he became a judge on the Great British Bake Off. He has an easy manner and lovely blue eyes. Amazingly this show was the polar opposite to last weeks rock concert. This week I had the best seat in the theatre bought for me as a birthday present by number two child. Thank you number two child! Thank you Paul Hollywood.
It all started because I am going away with girlfriends this next weekend. We’ve been going away twice a year for the last 16 years. The formula works. We rub along together each with their own tasks be it driving, shopping or washing dishes. We enjoy each other’s company, oh and we enjoy copious amounts of wine and chocolate. For the past many years I have taken photographs, lots of photographs. In my wisdom I decided to gather together all the past pictures of our group and maybe sort them out and have a giggle whilst we’re away. I didn’t realise (naively) how many various locations these pictures were in or how many there are. To get to the point this is why I am surrounded with piles of old pics. They go back to the late 1940s and are a fantastic social history of my family and many are truly vintage.
The big question is what am I to do with them all? I have started by throwing out all those pictures of waterfalls in locations I can’t remember, and unforgettable sunsets that I’ve forgotten about. I’ve sorted a few to pass onto daughter. I am thinking that I might make an album just of my Mum and Dad. I have spent the afternoon what I can only call wallowing in nostalgia! ( and I’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg)
The collection for our girly weekend has grown, but sadly the last 5 years or so are all digital images and not prints. I think that this is really sad as how often do you trawl back and enjoy digital pictures? Bring back old fashioned film I say or at the very least print the best off. After all the young generation will not have a biscuit tin full of pics to enjoy on dark evenings in the winter.
I’ve got a couple more days to continue seeking out our “girly weekend” pictures. But I’ve also got to make a Lemon Drizzle cake as a contribution to our afternoon teas, pack, get hair done, clean out my car (urgent) and leave Hubs ready meals in the fridge. ( The last task is a joke!) if you’d like to know we are off to Chatsworth House Christmas Fair -great joy. We are staying in a lovely cottage with a hot tub. There might be one or two photo opportunities!
Fresh from the oven
A friend gave me an American sour dough culture last week. I have nurtured this “living being” with much love and great care. I have fed it with specially purchased bread flour and stirred it carefully as instructed. Yesterday was THE day and I made the loaf. I left it to prove overnight when it rose so much it nearly took over the kitchen! OK I am prone to a little exaggeration!
Today a kneeded the thing again and left it to prove for a second time. Now at this point I should have been worried as it didn’t re-rise. I eventually put it into the oven at the correct temperature, I think. In due course I removed the baked loaf and it looked lovely if a little flat…..
The real problem started when I tried to cut the beast. I needed a hacksaw! I did taste it but was in fear of expensive dental treatment. It would make a great frisbee, or a weight for excercising, or a stone for my rock garden but not such a great sandwich. Ah well! I tried! Oops! I’ve just blocked the drain with the remaining culture! Help!!!!
Today was the BIG cake sale at Cilcain Community Cafe. It was in aid of Breakthrough For Breast a Cancer. We raised an amazing £175 in aid of the charity. A huge thank you to everyone who made cake, bought cake and ate cake! The diet starts tomorrow.👼
Today I have been so busy playing at being a “good housewife”! I have made Gooseberry jam I’m really getting into jam making. It is so easy. I used gooseberries that were in my freezer which my neighbours girls were selling at their gate this summer. I looked online for the recipe and was amazed when the jam turned a yummy pink colour. The recipe did say that it would but I didn’t believe it! We used to call gooseberries “goose gogs” when I was a child. I think that one of the jars will go back to my neighbour who supplied the berries. I do love giving home made food as gifts.
Whilst the jam was cooking I made a cheese scone ring. How about that for multi tasking? This was a Mary Berry recipe, again found on line ( she’s my current heroine). This scone is destined to be given away as well. This makes it all low calorie I suppose. I’m off to daughters tomorrow, who has guests staying. I am joining them for afternoon tea and thought this scone ring would make a good contribution with some lovely butter. I’ve not tasted it yet so I hope it’s OK.
This is a real baking week as I am organising a Community Cafe in my village on Saturday in aid off Breakthrough For Breast Cancer. This cafe will be from 2pm till 5 pm and we hope to sell lots of cake/tea/coffee for this good cause. Various friends have offered to come to help and most importantly, contribute cake. I currently have Chocolate cake,Victoria sandwich, a variety of sponge buns, and Bara Brith in my freezer. I just need to bake a little more. Maybe another cheese scone ring would be good mmmmm.
