Portmeirion was built by the architect Clough Williams-Ellis to show how a beautiful site could be developed without spoiling it. He bought it in 1925 and spent  50 years building what is in effect a folly. The Italian style village is tucked into a Welsh hillside overlooking a tidal estuary and is very beautiful.

All of the cottages are Grade 2 listed buildings and can be hired as holiday cottages and hotel suites. There are many “false” windows or Trompe l’oeil and optical illusions. There are cafes, restaurants and gift shops, there is a woodland and a coastal walk. We had a lovely day there on our way home from Abersoch, exploring the village square, free train ride and pathways. There was also a free mini guide to introduce us to the unusual ombré painted Italian village built in the Welsh countryside.-
